Measure Time in Linux with Time Base -- Use the PA technology's Time Base register to measure time at the nanosecond level in Linux on PowerPC and Cell BE microprocessors. Applications where this is useful include timestamping transactions (typically encrypted or digitally signed single-use messages), profiling code, and implementing small, precise software delays.
Disney, Stuffed Animals, Draw Kids to Online Games
CNN Money has up a piece looking at the next defining force in online games; neither Blizzard nor Lord of the Rings Online has their attention: it's all about stuffed animals. 'Tweens', as they're called, are a hugely influential market and game-makers are finally responding with online spaces keyed to their interests. Titles like Club Penguin and WebKinz allow older kids their freedom while still providing a safe place to play. Outfits like Disney and Nickelodeon are getting into the fray, and with good reason. Tweens, the article estimates, are a $40 billion demographic. "Club Penguin and Webkinz trumpet their sites as safe, ad-free environments. Disney and Nickelodeon are more frankly commercial and--in a big shift--ad-supported. Marketing to kids is always tricky; no one wants to be seen shilling to children.

To freshen the vintage products and make for a better value, the King of Oldies often takes two vinyl-era albums and combines them on one CD or bundles them in a double-disc package, in either case priced as if one album. Often, he'll also package six, eight or 10 of those discs in a specially priced and elegantly encased (wooden box) set. Shopping around Like a kid let loose in a candy store, this visitor went nuts in the Collectables warehouse. My day (and month) was made finding an exclusive box set of primo years (Colpix label) studio and concert albums by Nina Simone, gems I fondly remembered from my childhood but feared had been lost forever. I also grabbed a special Collectables grouping of early Elvis Presley albums pressed on heavyweight vinyl, who-knew-these-even-existed concert recordings by Little Feat and Lou Reed, decade-specific rock and soul oldies compilations (boy, have they got a lot of those!), and a CD pairing of two Broadway show-stoppers from Lena Horne ("Porgy and Bess," co-billed with Harry Belafonte, and the underrated, Harold Arlen/E.Y.Harburg-scored "Jamaica").

Scouts, cubs and beavers from Scouts Canada - Merritt Trail, will be digging in to do their part tomorrow at Merritt Island as part of the opening ceremonies of Earth Day Welland.
The beavers will get their Scoutree badge and the scouts will receive their conservation, environment and community badges for planting trees along Merritt Trail with some help from city of Welland staff and the Niagara Peninsula Conservation Authority. .
AOL takes a queue from TV
AOL, Time Warner Inc.'s Web unit, will introduce five online programs from producers such as "Survivor" creator Mark Burnett to attract advertisers seeking to reach beyond traditional media. The programs, including an online game based on the "Shrek the Third" movie and a reality show where finalists will move to an island, will be presented to about 500 potential advertisers today at Time Warner's New York City headquarters. AOL Chief Executive Officer Randy Falco replicated television's so-called upfront presentations, where networks such as ABC and NBC use previews of new shows to sell ads for the coming season. Falco, who joined AOL after three decades at NBC, is seeking a bigger share of the $29 billion online ad market. "Right now and moving forward, the best way for advertisers to reach their audience and understand the need of their customers will be online," Falco said in a telephone interview.
