Free Mobile Gaming with GameJump
The pricy antics of the PS3 and the hard to find Nintendo Wii may be stealing the gaming spotlight but while the big names in the industry battle it out, mobile gaming has evolved from the throwaway downloads of old into an industry to be reckoned with. GameJump in particular offers free game downloads and has made enough of an impact to warrant a nomination from the Webby Awards' for Best News and Entertainment Mobile Site. I downloaded a helicopter shooting game and a quirky shooter called "Office Zombies". My 2D helicopter bit the dust rather quickly while trying to avoid flea-like bullets but my zombie shooting skills helped me obtain 2nd place in the rankings. While the GameJump mobile games would have a hard time competing with my trusty Nintendo DS, the main draw for me is that it's all free.
RPG Vault Soapbox - Marketing Online Games
April 18, 2007 - In case it wasn't already abundantly apparent that the persistent state world category is continuing to grow, this week will bring us another indicator in the form of a new conference. Slated to take place on Thursday in San Francisco, the event, which is called Mastering the Craft of Online Gaming Infrastructure, seems notable for a fair number of reasons. One that jumps out is the relatively narrow nature of the topic area. Not very many years ago, such a focus would have been unimaginable; a conclave of the leading practitioners could have been held around a dining room table, quite possibly with space for the audience as well. Also worth a mention is that three more are currently being planned, all between now and the end of the year, on service and support, community management and general management respectively.
Week in video-game news: Goodbye to the 'budget' PS3; the Wii's ...
BUDGET BUSTED: During the 2006 holiday season, when everyone was scrambling to find a PlayStation 3, I stumbled across a pile in a toy store in northern Virginia. The clerk told me he was unable to sell them to even the most desperate gamers -- and all because of 40 missing gigabytes. Sony introduced the PS3 in two flavors: one with 20 gigabytes of memory for $500, and one with 60 gigabytes (and a few other features) for $600. But no one wanted the cheaper model, and Sony spokesman Dave Karraker said the higher-end version outsold it 10-to-1. So, the 20-gigabyte PS3 is being discontinued. "Better to put resources toward the ones that retailers want," Karraker said. There are still several thousand of the $500 consoles in stores, but once they run out, that's it. Now, what about that 80-gigabyte unit we've been hearing rumors about? WORLDWIDE WII: Nintendo has used the Wii's Internet capabilities to deliver a variety of non-game-related material you didn't realize you wanted on a console: weather forecasts, Associated Press news, even the silly yet addictive "Everybody Votes" polling channel.
