Starbucks, Global Green start online game to promote environmental ...

(U-WIRE NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. - The fictional town of Evergreen needs your help. Your mission: Explore the town, look for ways to reduce the impact of global warming and conserve as much energy as possible. At least, that's the premise of a new and free online game created by the partnership of Starbucks Coffee and Global Green USA, a national environmental organization.

"Planet Green Game" is a hybrid, being both educational and commercial. By correctly answering softball quiz questions and scoring points on a variety of minigames, players can learn of different ways to help the environment.

Each destination a player visits presents its own specific challenge. Players can even visit Starbucks in the game to learn about a promotion to encourage caffeine lovers to bring their own mug in during the month of April.

Trashing the Chalkboards

March 29, 2007 | Four years ago, when Linda Taggart arrived at Point Loma's Correia Middle School to serve as the school's new principal, she had some ambitious goals on her agenda.

A fresh coat of paint wouldn't do for Correia, she reasoned. Taggart planned to transform her classrooms into user-friendly learning centers for today's plugged-in kids.

Disney, Stuffed Animals, Draw Kids to Online Games

CNN Money has up a piece looking at the next defining force in online games; neither Blizzard nor Lord of the Rings Online has their attention: it's all about stuffed animals. 'Tweens', as they're called, are a hugely influential market and game-makers are finally responding with online spaces keyed to their interests. Titles like Club Penguin and WebKinz allow older kids their freedom while still providing a safe place to play. Outfits like Disney and Nickelodeon are getting into the fray, and with good reason. Tweens, the article estimates, are a $40 billion demographic. "Club Penguin and Webkinz trumpet their sites as safe, ad-free environments. Disney and Nickelodeon are more frankly commercial and--in a big shift--ad-supported. Marketing to kids is always tricky; no one wants to be seen shilling to children.

Internet Radio Broadcast Not Quite the Same

For the first time in several years, I was not in attendance at a Grand Rapids Rampage home game. Just hours before the start of the game, I returned home from a family trip to Walt Disney World in Orlando. After spending 1,300 miles traveling in a mini van with the wife and four kids, I just couldn’t bring myself to make the trip up to Grand Rapids for the game. So instead, I stayed home and listened to the Rampage game against the New York Dragons on the Internet.

When I cover Rampage home games, I usually sit next to the radio team in the press box, but I can’t really hear what they are saying during the game due to the crowd noise at the Van Andel Arena. So this was the first time I was able to listen to the new radio broadcasting team of Joe Parsons and Herman Moore.

Question: We had a blogger account for the past few years, and we moved to Wordpress and we have scrapers. How do we establish authority on the new site so that people don't rank higher for our original content? Jill: You need time to get that authority. You can't really fake authority. Todd: After you use the blogger.com platform, once you move, it's gone. You need to move that content over. Bruce: It's best to start a blog on your own site, but you can get it with time. Dave: Get someone to email your reader community.

Question: Will you be in trouble for doing click arbitrage? Dave: You'll be in trouble.
