Xbox Live Arcade Review: Castlevania - Symphony of the Night
A true classic when it launched on the generally anti-2-D PlayStation in 1997, this revolutionary game in the Castlevania franchise is the definition of a benchmark. It’s influence is still felt in recurring adventures on the Game Boy Advance and DS editions, and after 10 years, Symphony of the Night hasn’t lost an ounce of its appeal. Beginning with the epic battle from the finale of another true classic Castlevania, Dracula X, Symphony transitions into the first game in the series to break a linear platform model. Players explore a massive castle loaded with regenerating enemies as Alucard, hacking away at various ghosts and undead monsters in their quest to level up. The addictive nature is rarely matched by anything other than puzzle games. Finding new items, figuring out the best way to manage them, and heading out to battle with your latest finds brings that simple urge to continue on right behind it.
Artists find inspiration in video games
Video gamers have long considered some of the titles that have stolen the hours, weeks and even months of their lives to be high art. In the past few years, some artists and art and design schools have begun to agree. The byproduct is an interesting marriage of traditional disciplines, such as painting and classical music, with the cutting-edge world of gaming. Some 30 years after the introduction of video games into mainstream culture, their content and images have reached museums, rarified concert halls, other public spaces and even art books. Exhibit No. 1 is the ongoing show by Parsons the New School for Design, "The Sims: In the Hands of Artists," which features student works inspired by the popular PC game in which players create and manage the lives of one or more virtual characters.
ADHD Power Hour: RIP Kurt Vonnegut
15. Now that the Duke kids are innocent, Jackie Robinson has been honored, and Don Imus fired, can we go back to pretending race doesn't matter in American sports? 14. The Evil Empire is crumbling. 13. Manny is still being Manny, except now he's Manny Alexander. (Hitting .194 with no power.) 12. Through five percent of the season, Alex Rodriguez is the front-runner for the AL MVP and Felix Hernandez has passed Johan Santana as favorite for the AL Cy Young. (Don't tell me early stats don't mean anything. No matter how early in a developing situation, initial results are always the prelude to the rest of the story. If you look hard enough, you can gain meaningful knowledge about the future to come. Early stats certainly aren't the whole story, but they are definitely the first paragraphs, going on the first chapter.) 11.
