Both Sony consoles get just a little bit better

Sony has released new firmware updates for both its PlayStation 3 console and PlayStation Portable handheld. The PS3 gets bumped to version 1.70, which now enables the console to play original PSone software bought from the PlayStation Store previously only playable on the PSP. Save data for the PSone can now be used on the PSP.

Currently, the PlayStation Store lists only classic titles for download to PSP, though with the weekly update to the store due to hit tomorrow, PS3 support may be soon added.

Also new, and perhaps one of the first budding fruits from the Immersion settlement is the enabling of vibration force feedback when using PlayStation and PlayStation 2 accessories with the older generation games.

Other evidence of the return of rumble can be seen in the recent update to Gran Turismo HD, a free download for PlayStation 3 owners via the PlayStation Store.

Guide to festivals, 2007

If you can pull it from the waters, pluck it from a garden or chop it down in a swamp, chances are you can find a festival in south Louisiana that celebrates it.

From the Des Allemandes Catfish Festival to the Ponchatoula Strawberry Festival to the Patterson Cypress Sawmill Festival, south Louisianians are game for gathering in the name of our natural resources to eat, drink and play.

If you can't grow it, then you can learn to play it, dance to it or simply float along our waterways in it.

Some events, such as the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival and the Madisonville Wooden Boat Festival, attract people from around the world. Others, such as Visitation of Our Lady Cajun Festival in Marrero, draw a smaller neighborhood crowd.

No matter the size, all are staffed by locals dedicated to the cause of reveling in what makes south Louisiana such a rich place to live.

Lansbury, Seldes Rally, Teens Dish, Hoofers Strut: NY Stage

April 24 (Bloomberg) -- ``Deuce,'' Terrence McNally's play in previews at the Music Box Theater, is set at the U.S. Open in Flushing, Queens. While watching a match, two fictional former doubles champions reminisce about a time when women wore white, didn't grunt with every stroke and played at the West Side Tennis Club in Forest Hills with modest-sized wooden rackets.

Angela Lansbury, 81, is in her first Broadway role since a short-lived ``Mame'' revival in 1983. Marian Seldes, 78, plays her partner. Michael Blakemore directs.

And ``Deuce'' is McNally's first new Broadway play since ``Master Class'' in 1995, about the imperious diva Maria Callas and her students.

``I'm interested in people who have devoted their life to some kind of perfection,'' said McNally, 67, speaking from his Greenwich Village home.

Youth still learn in their off time

Jelani Lewis took his turn reading cards for math bingo to a room full of eager students who were hoping to win.

“Five plus five," the 9-year-old read out loud.

The children searched for the answer on their bingo cards, placing a red marker on the appropriate square.

Instead of staying at home and watching TV, Jelani and other students prefer to keep busy and flex their brain muscles by playing math bingo and other educational games on their spring break at the Boys & Girls Club in Santa Maria.

For this week, students from local schools stop by the club in the afternoon to play math games, write short stories,

participate in spelling bees and have tick-tack-toe tournaments.

“We try to do something educational every day," said Jewelee Matautia, who is the club's educational coordinator.

Brad Zimanek's Buzz column: The Players Choice offers whiffleball ...

Remember when you were a kid and you would play whiffleball for hours in the backyard with your buddies? Now, you have the chance to do it all over again.

The Players Choice just completed construction of an outdoor whiffleball field that will be home to leagues and tournaments, including youth, adult co-ed and adult men division offerings. A ribbon cutting ceremony for the field is planned for Thursday at noon. Free hot dogs and brats will be given away.

An adult coed four vs. four league (two men and two women) begins next Monday. A men's adult four vs. four league starts next Tuesday.

"Whiffleball is a sport many of us grew up with," said Mike Lichtfuss, managing owner of The Players Choice in a press release. "We also wanted to offer more outside activities and whiffleball is popular among all age groups.

Spurs Mailbag

We decided to go ahead and empty the Mailbag one last time before the playoffs pick up in earnest. As for the 746 of you who have emailed in the past few weeks to ask, "Can we beat Dallas?" you might want to start questioning whether the Spurs will be able to get out of the first round.

Are you finally starting to see the light, Johnny? Can you now envision how the Spurs could beat Dallas in a 7-game series?

It's hard to imagine Dallas beating the Spurs in a 7-game series. Unless of course Duncan has a bad foot again like last year. Jackson, San Antonio

Of course, I can envision it. But I also frequently envision myself joyously living out the rest of my life next to Scarlett Johansson and, according to her representatives, that's not going to happen.

Legal Internet Gambling in the US : An Editorial Investigation

As every person in America I dream of living a rich life. I long to be happy, but I also long to pay my bills without having to worry at the end of each month. I long to give money to my family members who are most in need. After my family is secure I would like to travel the world and discover many unique cultures and visit many amazing scenes. And I want to relax. For once in my life I want to be able to relax. But I can't relax until my family is secure and my family will not be secure until I make money. But I need BIG money to live in my dreams and I need it quick because my blood pressure is high and I am scared of the future. That mind frame, along with a sense of arrogance gained from several former business successes, led me to a legal form of Internet gambling in the United States.
